This underwear has become increasingly popular among menstruating individuals as an eco-friendly, comfortable, and convenient alternative to traditional menstrual products. However, buying good quality period proof underwear in Australia is not enough; you should also be able to take good care of them.
This article will share information on period panties and tips and tricks for caring for them and keeping them in good condition.
What is Period Underwear?
Period underwear is a type of menstrual product that is designed to absorb menstrual fluid during periods. It has a built-in absorbent layer that captures the fluid, providing a more sustainable, comfortable, and convenient option for managing periods. Period underwear comes in different styles and absorbency levels and can be worn alone or in combination with other menstrual products.
It comes in various styles, including full-coverage briefs, bikini styles, and thongs. Some brands offer high-waisted period underwear, which provides extra coverage and support during heavier flow days.
How to Choose the Right Period Underwear
When selecting period underwear, there are several factors to consider, such as absorbency, style, size, and fabric. It’s essential to choose a style and size that feels comfortable and provides adequate coverage and support for your flow and to select a fabric that feels comfortable against your skin and helps to prevent leaks.
How to Use Period Underwear?
Using period underwear is straightforward. First, select a style and size that feels comfortable for you because choosing a style that provides adequate coverage and support during your period is essential. Once you select the right size and style, wear them as you would with regular underwear.
Period underwear can be used alone or in combination with other menstrual products, such as tampons or menstrual cups. If you choose to use period underwear alone, be sure to choose a style that provides enough coverage and support for your flow. For heavier flow days, consider using period underwear in conjunction with another menstrual product.
Period underwear should be changed as often as you would change a pad or tampon. Depending on your flow, you may need to change your period underwear every 4-6 hours and more frequently if you have a heavy flow.
How to Wash Period Underwear?
Properly washing period underwear is essential to maintain their absorbency and prolong their lifespan. Here are some tips for washing your period underwear:
- Rinse your period underwear in cold water: After removing your period underwear, rinse them in cold water. This helps to remove any excess blood and prevent stains from setting in.
- Hand wash or use a delicate cycle: Period underwear should be washed gently or in cold water. You can also hand wash them if you prefer. Avoid using hot water, as this can damage the absorbent materials.
- Use mild detergent: Use a mild detergent that is free of harsh chemicals, fragrances, and dyes. Harsh detergents can damage absorbent materials and reduce their effectiveness.
- Avoid fabric softeners: Fabric softeners can clog the absorbent materials in period underwear, reducing their effectiveness. Avoid using fabric softeners when washing your period underwear.
- Hang dry: Period underwear should be hung to dry. Avoid using a dryer, as the heat can damage the absorbent materials.
How to Care for Your Period Underwear?
Proper care is essential to prolong the lifespan of your period underwear. Here are some tips for caring for your period underwear:
- Avoid bleach: Bleach can damage the absorbent materials in period underwear, reducing their effectiveness. Avoid using bleach when washing your period underwear.
- Don’t use dryer sheets: Dryer sheets can leave a residue on period underwear, reducing their absorbency. Avoid using dryer sheets when drying your period underwear.
- Store them properly: Store your period underwear in a cool, dry place. Avoid storing them in direct sunlight or in a damp environment, as this can damage the absorbent materials.
- Replace them when necessary: Period underwear should be replaced every 6-12 months, depending on their condition. If you notice that your period underwear is no longer absorbing as effectively as it once did, or if it has become stretched out or worn, it’s time to replace them.
- Be mindful of the environment: One of the significant benefits of period underwear is its sustainability. Be mindful of the environment when caring for your period underwear. Avoid using harsh chemicals, and try to use eco-friendly detergents when possible. When it’s time to replace your period underwear, consider donating or recycling them.
