Kolhapur Municipal Corporation plans rehabilitation of 19,000 families under PMAY
The Government of Maharasthra has conceptualized a much desirable sketch to make the Kolhapur city a slum free city by 2022. The civic body has recommended re-establishing 19,000 poor families under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) at an expense of Rs.1500 crore.
As per the scheme, the state Government has to bear the same amount as funded by the central Government for every unit constructed. Most of the under privileged slum areas are situated on the areas under the civic control. The slum areas are distinguished on the basis of the areas which they are located.
The outline of the plan will be put for discussion in the General body meeting of the Kolhapur Muncipal Corporation and if it got a nod, the city body will be the pioneer local body in the Maharasthra state to present the blue print.
The Kolhapur Muncipal Corporation has surveyed over 20,000 applicants and the short listed beneficiaries will get the house under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna as per various criterion suggested by the Government. The four ways under which the plan is designed are in-situ rehabilitation of the slum residents, developing residential constructions with the involvement of private investments, offering credit linked subsidy for affordable housing scheme and individual house construction.
The Government has finalized on issuing grants in between 1 lakh and 2.3 lakh and loans with low interests upto 6 lakh for constructing the residential facilities under different plans. Each beneficiary can get the benefit of any one of the modes. The economically weaker sections (EWS) can avail a house of 30 square meters and other sections have different sized homes.
There are totally 64 slum areas in the city and each one of it will be crafted into a decent accommodation for the under privileged families with females as the main beneficiaries to empower women.
The result of this plan is totally dependent on the final execution of the plan which is the biggest challenge in front of the body. Hope the plan gets a perfect implementation and each of the home will ensure a smile on the slum dwellers’ faces.
