ToggleHistory of Odisha Foundation Day
The history of Odisha Foundation Day dates back to the British era when the British government divided the Indian subcontinent into several provinces based on religion, language, and culture. Before the formation of Odisha as a separate state, the region was a part of the Bengal Presidency and was known as the ‘Orissa Province.’
However, the people of Odisha felt that their distinct identity, language, and culture were not adequately represented and demanded a separate state for themselves. The Odisha movement gained momentum in the early 20th century, and several prominent leaders like Madhusudan Das, Gopabandhu Das, and Maharaja Krushna Chandra Gajapati worked tirelessly to realize this dream.
Finally, on April 1, 1936, the Odisha Province was dissolved, and a new state, Odisha, was formed on linguistic basis. The new state comprised several princely states, including the erstwhile kingdoms of Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, and Sambalpur. The first Chief Minister of Odisha, Harekrushna Mahatab, hoisted the state flag and sang the state song, ‘Bande Utkala Janani,’ on this day, marking the beginning of a new era for the people of Odisha.
