What is the mitral valve?

The bicuspid valve or mitral valve lies between the left ventricle and the left atrium. It is one of the atrioventricular valves along with the tricuspid valve. It controls the blood flow from the left atrium to the left ventricle. It has two leaflets and is surrounded by the annulus. It contributes to the S1 sound. If the mitral valve doesn’t pump blood properly, then the body is affected as it doesn’t get the desired and needed amount of blood that is filled with oxygen and this can lead to severe critical conditions.     • Mitral valve stenosis: It happens when the mitral valve narrows down, and in this way, it blocks the blood flow.   • Mitral valve prolapse: In this condition blood mightleakbackward and often people don’t get to know about this condition because in many cases the symptoms never appeared even. It happens due to a leaky valve. At times, it can be agenetical disorder as well as researchers have found.During MVP, the mitral valve prolapses into the left atrium. This occurs during the systole. Some kinds of MVP are dangerous whereasothers are not. This valvular disease has several symptoms like: chest pain, oedema, dizziness, fainting, panic, anxiety problems, numbness in hands, palpitations, etc. The main causes of this disorder are: Floppy valve syndrome, Barlow’s syndrome, scoliosis, muscular dystrophy, marfan syndrome, ebstein’s anomaly etc. the above-mentioned medicines can also help the repair of this condition and surgery might also be needed at times.
