You have installed solar panels and are already seeing a reduction in your utility bills. However, you may be interested in knowing if there are ways to maximize the efficiency of your solar panel. The answer is yes. In fact, following just a handful of solar panel optimization tips can help you get the most out of your solar investment.

ToggleBuy a Solar Power Concentrator
With a solar power concentrator, you can get the most power from your solar panels by concentrating solar light. A solar power concentrator uses lenses or mirrors to focus a lot of sun on the receiver.
A concentrator is equipped with a tracking system. The concentrated light is positioned on the solar panel in the exact spot for maximum efficiency. This lets the solar panel harness the available light from the sun to generate the most energy. This may save you additional money. An added benefit of using a solar power concentrator is that you can use it to store energy at night efficiently.
Adjust the Angle of Your Solar Panel
Solar panels must face the south. Their pitch will determine how much sunlight they will capture. The pitch and slope of your solar panel are primary factors in getting the most out of them. It also helps to keep the panels free of debris.
Your solar panel may look clean, but the rain can leave dust on the panels, minimizing their energy output. Keeping your solar panels at the correct pitch reduces the amount of debris that collects on them and can counteract some of the adverse effects of this debris.
Use a Backup Battery
One of the biggest arguments against solar panels is that they only work if the sun is out. This is true. What is also true is that, in most homes, solar panels are creating more energy than the home needs.
A backup battery allows you to store energy that you can pull at night, when there is an energy outage in the area because of a storm, or when there is an overcast sky. An added benefit of a renewable energy battery storage system is that it lets you minimize your home’s carbon footprint.
Reduce Energy Use
Familiarize yourself with the output of your solar panel array. Compare this to the level of power your appliances use. To use less energy, try not to charge as many devices simultaneously. Try to minimize your use of high energy-consuming devices simultaneously.
For example, don’t use your washing machine and your dishwasher simultaneously. If you are in a room with windows and it is sunny outside, consider turning off the lights. This will maximize the efficiency of your solar panels and counteract low-voltage issues in your home.
Protect Solar Panels from Overheating
The temperature on your roof can be up to 20 degrees Fahrenheit hotter than the temperature on the ground. As the temperature rises, the performance of solar panels decreases.
One way to protect your solar panels from this heat is to leave at least six inches of space between the solar panels and the roof. Therefore, wind currents can carry heat away from the panels. This will maximize the energy generated by your solar panel arrays.
Do Not Install Solar Panels in Shaded Areas
Solar panels, as the name implies, need sunlight to generate energy. Shade minimizes their electrical output. Many people do not realize how powerful of impact shade can have on a series of solar panels.
If only one photovoltaic cell is shaded, it influences the energy-generating power of the neighboring cells. This is because the shaded cell works like a resistor. The two biggest offenders of solar panels and shade are trees and buildings. When you plan to install solar panels, make sure you spend time analyzing the site and ensure that you are not having an issue with shade.
