India is a land of many languages. There are 22 officially recognized languages in India, with Hindi being the most widely spoken. Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Gujarati, Kannada, Oriya and Malayalam are also popular languages in India. Official Languages in India are decided by the Constitution of India. Here is a list of Official Languages of India:

Official Languages in India

1. Hindi-

A majority of the population in India speaks Hindi making it the most common language in the country. It is also one of the 22 scheduled languages mentioned in the Indian constitution and is popularly known as “Hindustani” or “Khadi Boli”.

2. Bengali-

Spoken by around 83 million people, Bengali is the second most popular language in India. It originates from the eastern part of the subcontinent and is also one of the 22 scheduled languages mentioned in the Indian constitution.

3. Telugu-

Telugu is spoken by around 74 million people making it the third most popular language in India. It is mainly spoken in the southern states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. It is also one of the 22 scheduled languages mentioned in the Indian constitution.

4. Marathi-

Spoken by around 71 million people, Marathi is the fourth most popular language in India. It is mainly spoken in the western state of Maharashtra and is also one of the 22 scheduled languages mentioned in the Indian constitution.

5. Tamil-

Tamil is spoken by around 61 million people making it the fifth most popular language in India. It is mainly spoken in the southern state of Tamil Nadu and is also one of the 22 scheduled languages mentioned in the Indian constitution.

6. Urdu-

Urdu is spoken by around 51 million people making it the sixth most popular language in India. It is mainly spoken in the northern states of Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar. It is also one of the 22 scheduled languages mentioned in the Indian constitution.

7. Gujarati-

Spoken by around 46 million people, Gujarati is the seventh most popular language in India. It is mainly spoken in the western state of Gujarat and is also one of the 22 scheduled languages mentioned in the Indian constitution.

8. Kannada-

Kannada is spoken by around 44 million people making it the eighth most popular language in India. It is mainly spoken in the southern state of Karnataka and is also one of the 22 scheduled languages mentioned in the Indian constitution.

9. Malayalam-

Malayalam is spoken by around 33 million people making it the ninth most popular language in India. It is mainly spoken in the southern state of Kerala and is also one of the 22 scheduled languages mentioned in the Indian constitution.

10. Oriya-

Oriya is spoken by around 32 million people making it the tenth most popular language in India. It is mainly spoken in the eastern state of Odisha and is also one of the 22 scheduled languages mentioned in the Indian constitution.
