What Is the SAT Examination?

The SAT is a standardized test that measures a student’s readiness for college. The test consists of two main sections, Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, and an optional Essay section. The total test duration is 3 hours (without the essay section) or 3 hours and 50 minutes (with the essay section).

The SAT is designed to assess a student’s knowledge of math, reading, and writing skills that are essential for success in college. The test is administered by the College Board, a non-profit organization that also administers other standardized tests such as the PSAT/NMSQT, Advanced Placement (AP) exams, and CLEP exams.

SAT Structure

The SAT consists of four main sections: Reading, Writing and Language, Math, and an optional Essay. Each section is scored on a scale of 200-800, with a total score of 400-1600 for the Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing sections. The Essay is scored separately on a scale of 2-8.

The Reading section consists of 52 multiple-choice questions that test a student’s comprehension of complex texts from a range of disciplines. The Writing and Language section consists of 44 multiple-choice questions that test students’ ability to revise and edit passages. The Math section consists of two subsections, one with a calculator and one without, and includes 58 multiple-choice and grid-in questions that test a student’s math skills.

The Essay section is optional and consists of a single essay prompt that asks students to analyze a provided text and write an essay discussing how the author builds an argument.

Syllabus

The SAT tests a student’s knowledge of Reading, Writing, Language, and Mathematics. The Reading section tests a student’s ability to comprehend and analyze passages from literature, social studies, and science. The Writing and Language section tests a student’s knowledge of grammar, syntax, and punctuation. The Mathematics section tests a student’s algebra, geometry, and trigonometry knowledge.

Eligibility and Dates

There are no specific eligibility criteria to appear for the SAT exam. However, most students take the SAT in their junior or senior year of high school, usually in the spring or fall. The SAT is administered seven times a year in August, October, November, December, March, May, and June. Students can register for the exam online on the College Board website.

  • Understand the Test Format: Students should familiarize themselves with the SAT’s structure, format, and scoring system.
  • Practice, Practice, and Practice: Practicing with official SAT practice tests and questions is essential for success on the SAT. The College Board offers free practice tests and questions online.

SAT Exam Fees

The SAT fees for international students is $55 without the optional essay and $68 with the optional essay. However, there may be additional fees for late registration, test date changes, and other services. Fee waivers are available for eligible students who meet certain criteria, such as low family income.
