Kolkata Flyover Collapse: Breaks Out The Fear

In a major drastic event as on Thursday, an under-construction flyover suddenly broke down in North Kolkata at Girish Park (Ganesh Talkies) killing over 24 people and injuring approximately over 100 people. The incident took place when the construction workers were on the spot managing to finish the work on time. This is when the mishap took place, a chunk of flyover which was to be connected on both the ends suddenly collapsed.

According to the eyewitness, they heard a loud sound as if some bomb goes off somewhere in that area. But when the debris and dust cleared off from the region everyone was shocked to see that the whole flyover came down killing and injuring many. The bridge is located in one of the busiest as well as populated place in Kolkata i.e in Barabazar. The very reason leads to rise in number of casualties as well as injured people.

The locals were very much upset with the city police as they were first government officials to reach the spot but yet they were unable to start any rescue operation. But with the joint operation of both the Indian Army and NDRF, the rescue operation soon began trying to save as many people as possible.

It was the idea of Left Front government to build a flyover in the area in order to reduce the congestion during rush hours. The work began in 2007 but it was stopped because if the storage of the funds. After that, the flyover has missed around nine deadlines but still the work is not complete. During this dreadful situation, all the political parties of West Bengal engaged themselves in war of words.

The present ruling party is blaming Left Front for not submitting the required documents as requested, while the other opposition parties are blaming TMC government for this incident. Many have accused the present state government as a corrupt one for not using the genuine raw materials required for building a flyover. Although the investigation is still going on hence there is very little for anyone to confess anything about this incident.

IVRCL who were given the contract to complete the flyover in given time failed to do so miserably. In a shocking event they claimed this incident as a ‘God’s Act’ and not any human error. The Kolkata police have already logged an FIR against this construction company under section 302(homicide), 308(attempt to commit homicide) and 407 of Indian Penal Code(IPC). The police had so far arrested three officials of IVRCL. The opposition parties have claimed that, the Mamta government is to be blamed for this incident along with IVRCL.

” As since TMC has made so such achievements this year, they were forcing the construction company to finish the work before Vidhan Sabha vote so as to increase their vote bank” said Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi of BJP government. There are obviously several factors which need to be considered before finally accusing some of the crime. Experts also believe that the metal used for building purpose of Vivekananda flyover may have been corroded over period of years.
