Water damage can be a devastating event. Not only does it cause physical damage to the property, but it can also lead to extensive financial losses. Commercial water damage can result from broken pipes, flooded appliances, and even weather-related events such as hurricanes and flash flooding. If water damage is not cleaned up properly, it can quickly become a health hazard. The steps below are a helpful guide to the commercial water damage clean up process.

Toggle1. Assess the Damage
Take a look at the extent of the water damage, the type of materials affected, and the health and safety risks. Also, determine what caused the water damage to prevent it from happening again.
Some common causes of commercial water damage include:
- Broken pipes
- Flooded appliances
- Weather-related events such as hurricanes and flash flooding
- Leaking roofs or windows
- Sewage backup or overflow
Once you identify the cause of the water damage, several steps can be taken to prevent it from happening again. For example, if a broken pipe is responsible for the water damage, then repairing or replacing the pipe may help to prevent future incidents. If a leaking roof is causing water damage, then addressing the roofing issue may help solve the problem.
2. Stop the Source of Damage
If the source of the water damage is not stopped, it can quickly cause even more damage. The longer water is allowed to stand, the greater the chance for permanent damage.
Several steps can be taken to stop the source of the water damage:
- Turn off the water supply if possible
- Disconnect wet electrical appliances
- Remove furniture and other items from wet areas
- Place a bucket under dripping pipes to catch leaks
In some cases, it may not be possible to stop the source of the water damage. For example, if a broken pipe continues to leak, stopping the water flow may not be possible. In these cases, professional help should be sought immediately.
3. Remove Standing Water
The faster the water is removed, the less damage will be done. Removal of standing water can be done using a pump or wet/dry vacuum. You can also direct stagnant water to areas that can be absorbed more efficiently, such as a lawn or garden.
If the water is contaminated, then special precautions must be taken. For example, if sewage is involved in the water damage, you will need to wear protective clothing and proper safety gear when removing the water.
It is important to note that not all water can be removed. Some will need to evaporate on their own. The use of fans and dehumidifiers can help to speed up this process.
4. Dry the Area
Once the water has been removed, the area needs to be dried. This can be done using fans and dehumidifiers. Drying helps prevent the growth of mold and mildew, which can cause health problems. The process should be done as quickly as possible to prevent further damage.
If the area is not dried properly, it can lead to extensive and expensive repairs. In some cases, the property may need to be replaced altogether.
Remember that not all surfaces dry at the same rate. Some may take longer than others. Be sure to allow enough time for everything to dry properly before returning items to the area or using it.
Also, note that not all of the damage caused by water can be seen. There may be damage to walls, floors, and ceilings that are not visible until dry. It is important to keep this in mind when assessing the damage and deciding on a course of action.
5. Repair the Damage
Once the area has been dried, it is time to repair the damage. This may include repairing walls, floors, and ceilings. It may also include replacing furniture and other damaged items.
It is important to remember that not all of the damage caused by water can be repaired. There may be some permanent damage that will need to be addressed. Professional help should be sought in these cases.
During the repair process, put measures to prevent future water damage. Such measures include repairing broken pipes, addressing roofing issues, unblocking sewer lines, and so on. Failure to do so may result in further damage and increased costs.
Water damage can be a costly and time-consuming problem to address. It is important to have a plan in place before it happens. The steps above provide a helpful guide to the commercial water damage clean-up process. By following these steps, you can minimize the damage caused by water and get your business back up and running as quickly as possible.
