PCOS ( Polycystic ovary syndrome) is a common condition that impacts 10% of women of reproductive age. It is highlighted by enhanced levels of androgens (male hormones) that lead to problems like acne, obesity, and infertility.

This condition is associated with PCOSCO ( comorbidities), which are conditions that co occur with PCOS. These comorbidities also impact on psychological and physical well being of an individual with PCOS.

This article will cover the comorbidities in PCOS, particularly focusing on comorbidities related to fertility. Here we also tell you some tips to manage the comorbidities in PCOS.

What is PCOS ( Polycystic ovary syndrome)

More than half of millions of women of reproductive age in the US are living with PCOS, and it has become one of the most common endocrine disorders. It is characterized by fluid filled and enlarged scans on ovaries known as cysts that cause infertility and cause other issues in reproductive systems.

This problem is associated with other conditions also, like obesity, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes. These conditions seem to play an important role in PCOS severity and development.

Sometimes, this syndrome is quite tough to diagnose because it often mimics other health conditions. If you have PCOS, your doctor suggests treatments improve your symptoms.

Symptoms and signs

There are many symptoms of PCOS, but some common symptoms are infertility, irregular periods, acne, and weight gain. However, there is no one size fits approach to treating PCOS, and there are many available treatments that help you to improve the symptoms of PCOS.

Suppose you are also experiencing the symptoms of PCOS. In that case, it is crucial to consult with a doctor so that they determine whether there is a condition or any other solution to improve the life quality.

Different types of PCOS

Here are the different types of PCOS; every type has its comorbidities. Some of the common comorbidities are

  • Heart disease
  • Type II diabetes mellitus
  • Insulin resistance
  • Cognitive impairment
  • Lack of ovulation ( anovulatory cycles)
  • Hyperandrogenism ( male hormones at a high level)
  • Psychiatric disorders such as depression or anxiety

Comorbidities in PCOS

PCOS is associated with an increased risk of developing other diseases, like obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. The profile of PCOSCO has not been studied well, but the research suggests that there are many health conditions that occur commonly with PCOS. These conditions consist of the following.

  1. Obesity

It is a common comorbidity. It is because obesity is associated with a high risk of developing type 2 diabetes and other chronic diseases, like stroke, heart disease, and cancer.

  1. Type 2 diabetes

Diabetes is another common comorbidity. It is because diabetes enhances the risk of developing pregnancy related complications like high blood pressure and gestational diabetes. Additionally, it also leads the insulin resistance and becomes the major factor in PCOS development.

  1. Gestational diabetes

It occurs in about half the women who develop PCOS. Gestational diabetes usually disappears after childbirth but occasionally causes type 2 diabetes later in life.

  1. High blood pressure

Hypertension is another common problem in PCOS. It is because of the fact that hypertension enhances the risk to develops cardiovascular diseases, which leads to the death of women.

Also, hypertension leads to health problems like obesity and diabetes. Symptoms of hypertension in women with PCOS consists

  • A fast heart rate
  • Extreme tiredness
  • Heavy menstrual periods
  • A build up of fluid on edema
  • Vomiting or nausea
  • If you experience any of the symptoms, then you should ask to doctor for a diagnosis or further treatment plan.
  1. Obstructive sleep apnea

It is the condition in which people are unable to breathe repeatedly while sleeping, most often due to airway collapse. It often leads to problems with inflammation, weight gain, and diabetes.

This condition is more common in women than men and is more common in people who have experienced PCOS. People with PCOS often have high testosterone levels, which contributes to the development of obstructive sleep apnea.

Conclusion

PCOSCO is referred to as a common endocrine condition that has an impact on 10% of women. Enlarged ovaries and an imbalance in the production of male s*x hormones feature it.
