What Tests Should Be Done In The First Trimester Of Pregnancy?

October 22, 2020 3 Min Read

Pregnancy is one of the most beautiful phases anyone can experience. Nevertheless, it is also a time of stress and worry. It is natural for every expectant parent to be concerned about the health and safety of their unborn child.

Good prenatal care is one of the most essential aspects of having a healthy pregnancy. Hospitals like the CK Birla Hospital and Cloudnine are some of the best maternity hospitals in Gurgaon offering tailored prenatal care customised to suit the needs of your pregnancy.

As a part of your prenatal care, your obstetrician would recommend several screening tests at different stages of your pregnancy. This is to ensure that your child is growing and developing as expected. In case anything unusual is detected in any of the scans, the doctor can provide the necessary treatment for you and your child. Care should also be taken against infections like BV as that can also have an adverse effect on the baby. myvluxe.com is providing solutions for BV

Pregnancy complications such as gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension, preeclampsia etc can be monitored and managed effectively if they are detected early on in the pregnancy. Dr Aruna Kalra, one of the best obstetricians in Gurgaon sheds light on important tests and scans you must get done in the first trimester of your pregnancy.

Dating and viability ultrasound scan

This is the first ultrasound scan you would be recommended. This scan will not only help you confirm your pregnancy it is also essential to check

  • If the embryonic sac is intrauterine
  • For an ectopic pregnancy
  • any cause of unusual spotting or bleeding

This test also helps in identifying the due date or expected date of delivery. This helps in planning out the different stages of your pregnancy. You will be able to hear your baby’s heartbeat for the first time during this scan. So get ready to make some lasting memories. If you are having twins or triplets, your doctor will be able to decipher between the heartbeats of your babies.

If you are undergoing the scan before eight weeks of your pregnancy, you will be recommended a transvaginal scan (TVS). This is because your baby may be too small or low in your abdomen to be detected by the abdominal ultrasound scan. This type of scan i0s also recommended if you are overweight or if your uterus is very deep in your pelvis. TVS is done with the help of a probe inserted into the vagina. It is best to talk to your doctor at length to prepare yourself for this scan.

This scan can also be done as an abdominal ultrasound scan. This is recommended if you have completed at least 9 weeks of your pregnancy. This scan is not painful so you don’t have to fear it! Many doctors advise expectant mothers to come for this scan with their bladders full as it helps move the uterus higher up in the abdomen, making it easier to see in the scan.

Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT)

In this test, the DNA from your baby’s placenta is studied to check if there is any risk of your child having a genetic disorder. NIPT is generally done after you complete 9 weeks of your pregnancy. This test however, does not give any conclusive proof of the presence of any genetic disorder. It only indicates the likelihood of the same.

NIPT is a simple procedure. You would be asked to give a small sample of your blood. This sample is then studied along with the results of your first trimester ultrasound. Based on the results, your obstetrician might recommend a few advanced diagnostic tests like amniocentesis or CVS.

NIPT is useful to detect the likelihood of genetic disorders such as down syndrome, Edwards syndrome, patau syndrome etc. If your blood type is Rh negative, this test is especially important to test for Rh incompatibility (if you are Rh negative and your baby is Rh positive)
