A Detailed Guide: Types of Pharmaceutical Medicines

December 21, 2020 4 Min Read

Pharmaceutical medicines can be considered a discipline that deals with the discovery, evaluation, and smooth clinical aspects of pharmaceutical development. It involves developing different drugs, oral medication, and various other medicinal formats used to cure different types of diseases and illnesses. These medicines can exist in different states of matter, such as a powder (solid), liquid forms such as syrups and precipitants (gas) observed in inhalers, and other pulmonary medicine. However, most of these come with a pharmaceutical desiccant added to the package. The primary role is to suck out all the moisture and maintain a state of dryness for longer shipping routes and increase the medicine’s storage life.

General types of pharmaceutical medicine

There are three general formats of pharmaceutical medicine available out there, and all of them serve a different purpose.

Liquid

In this form, the active part of medicine or the salt is mixed with liquid to increase absorption in the body; it might be a solution or syrup, depending on the type of drug. Most of the time, a little colouring or sugar is added to the liquid.

Tablet

The medicine’s active part or salt is combined with some other digestible material and is pressed into a round or oval solid shape. Different types of tablets can be found on the market, and you can take all of these with water.

Capsules

The active part of the medicine is present in a plastic shell that is perfectly decomposable, and the capsule will dissolve when ingested into the patient’s stomach. The medicine present within the pill might not absorb until the hydrochloric acid present in your stomach doesn’t dissolve it completely.

Other types of medicine

Apart from the general intake of the medicine, there are other classes to consider as well, such as;

Tropical medicines

These are the creams, ointments, or lotions that are applied directly onto the skin. The availability corresponds with the market requirement in the form of tubes and bottles. The salt of the medicine is mixed with some fragrant substance to make it easier to apply to your skin.

Suppositories

In this type of medication, medicine’s active part is mixed with another substance while being pressed in the bullet shape to insert into the bottom. The drug melts with the help of body temperature and releases its effects.

Drops

It works best if it can reach the affected area directly, and therefore the active part or salt of the medicine is now applied to the affected area such as the ear, nose, or eyes.

Inhalers

These are the pulmonary devices and are used to cure asthma and other lung-related complications; it is the quickest form of medicine uptake. It gets released directly into the lungs while released under pressure. These can be difficult to use at first, but things turn when you continue to use them.

Injections

There are different types of injections based on what diseases these will be tackling and how they will be injected into the body, i.e., intramuscular or IM injection given to the muscle. It can also be an Intrathecal injection given around the spinal cord’s fluid or IV injections that are supplied directly into the vein.

Types of desiccants used in medicine

As described earlier, different types of pharmaceutical desiccant are used or placed in medicine to absorb moisture while making the storage environment dry for extended shipping. Following are some of the types of desiccants that pharmaceutical companies use;

  • Silica gel.
  • Molecular Sieve (ZEOLITE).
  • Activated alumina.

These can also be taken as few desiccant examples that find high practice among the pharmaceutical industry. These are explained in detail which is as follows;

Silica gel

The silica gel desiccant is a granular and porous form of silicon dioxide prepared using the sodium silicate. Silica gel traps the water molecules inside the packed bottles or containers of medicine using the principle of adsorption. The water gets trapped inside the active molecules, and the shipping environment gets much drier, which fulfils the criteria for longer shipping times.

Molecular Sieve (ZEOLITE)

It has various small holes of uniform size; though the holes are short, it serves enough of a gradient to block large molecules such as water while allowing fewer small molecules to pass quickly. It carries more adsorption capacity of almost 20-30% by weight.

Activated Alumina

Activated Alumina is developed from aluminium hydroxide; activated alumina is a highly porous material and works as a desiccant in pharmaceutical production. It has tunnel-like pores that offer a very high surface area to weight ratio and is considered the best adsorption element that goes with various pharmaceutical products.

Conclusion

The types of pharmaceutical medicine and the desiccating agents used to keep them secure and usable for longer times might continue to change along with various pharmaceutical industry practices. But it is essential to consider those changes and try to upgrade to these changes.
