Digital marketing is amongst the topmost payable jobs in the present scenario. There are bright prospects of getting high compensation as the companies keep on increasing their expenditure on digital marketing. It is estimated that by the end of 2019, the spending on digital marketing shall be increased by 17.6% to $333.25 billion all over the globe. It would reach an astounding mark of $517.51 billion by the year 2023.
A fair share of this amount shall be invested in hiring digital marketers -both freelancers and in-house online marketing experts. So, if you wish to become one of the topmost freelance digital marketers, then here are some of the suggestions which can prove to help steer your career in the right direction.
Preparing yourself for different situations
It is possible that being an employee, you are used to acting as per the orders of your boss. But as a freelancer, you have tobe proactive and take all the initiatives by yourself. Some of your clients might come with a well-organized action plan while others would like to seek your advice for developing a successful digital marketing policy.
Interestingly you have to jump into peculiar situations sometimes like dealing with the mess left by the past manager, researching and testing new techniques or convincing the clients why your suggestion would work better than what they initially had in mind.
Working in the right direction
Digital marketing is a vast field ranging from search engine optimization (SEO), conversion rate optimization(CRO), email marketing, pay-per-click(PPC) and social media marketing(SMM). Probably you might have gained expertise in all these fields in your office. But being a freelancer, it is advisable that you must pick one core specialty of yours and stick to it.
For example, you can become an Instagram personality for mobile brands. So the point here is that it is better to become an expert in one field rather than being a generalist. It would allow you to build brand value and authority at a faster rate which in return would help in attracting high ticket clients.
Networking means a lot in freelancing
You can face difficulty in securing your first few gigs. Therefore it is advisable to :
- Join and participate in communities specialized in niche marketing.
- You can also send a letter of introduction (LOI) to the people you are associated online.
- You must also explain your field of expertise and job along with asking if you can be of any help to them.
- You should also contact your friends and past colleagues and ask them for some referrals in their organizations.
- Last but not least you should never avoid your offline network. You should mingle with the people working at the local co-working space and participate in workshops and local commercial events which can help in connecting you with newer prospects.
So, to wrap up it is always advisable for budding digital marketing freelancers that they should use all their skills in promoting themselves just as they did for their client and build a buzz around their name.
