Mathematics And Physics Not Compulsory For Engineering Aspirants: AICTE

AICTE has declared that mathematics and physics not compulsory subjects for engineering aspirants. Are you all aware of this fact? If not this blog will provide you with detailed information about the same. Because many people have heard the news but do not have detailed information. Well, this rule will come into operation in the coming academic year 2021-2022. Do not think that AICTE has given only oral declaration. Because The All India Council for Technical Education has publicized their approved handbook for this academic year. In this handbook, it has been clarified that aspiring engineering students are not bound to study mathematics and physics anymore in class 12. Let us dive into the details of this fact:

Eligibility criteria

Are you still studying class 12 or have passed or are going to be promoted to higher secondary education this academic year? The criteria needed to take admission to UG engineering classes have been changed. Students are no more required to have mathematics and physics as compulsory subjects in class 12.

But do not forget that this rule has no relevance before the coming academic year 2021-2022.

For now, students dreaming to study in engineering colleges must opt for any of the three subjects in class 12. They are:

  • Chemistry
  • Biology
  • Physics
  • Computer science
  • Information practices
  • Electronics and IT
  • Biotechnology
  • Agriculture
  • Engineering
  • Business studies
  • Technical vocational subject

This chart shows that it is up to the student whether he/she wants to go for physics and mathematics in higher secondary education or not.

This is not the end. There is much more information that engineering aspirants should remain updated about. Some percentages have been set by AICTE without which the higher secondary students will be considered failed. 45% marks is the minimum score required for unreserved category students to pass in class 12. While 40% marks are the minimum passing marks in class 12 for reserved category students.

What more declaration?

Yes, it is true that mathematics and physics not compulsory for engineering aspirants. But we all know that both of these subjects are very much necessary in everyday life. AICTE has not ignored this factor. So those engineering aspirants not willing to study physics and mathematics in class 12 have to follow another rule. They have to study bridge courses in physics and maths in the initial semester of the engineering course. This step was important to strengthen the base of students in these subjects.

Do you want to know about the bridge courses in detail?

According to the AICTE handbook, all engineering universities have to offer bridge courses like physics, mathematics, and engineering drawing. These courses in the very first semester will help the students grab the advanced education effortlessly.

Criticisms of the decision: mathematics and physics not compulsory for engineering aspirants

Teachers and All India Universities are certainly against the rule that AICTE has declared. These teachers and some universities have strong beliefs that physics and mathematics are two essential subjects for higher secondary students. These subjects must not be made optional. So a strong protest has been raised against the decision of AICTE.
